Re-Mixing Trail Mix
March 18, 2022
Change may be the name of the game for Trail Re-Mix 2022, but this is not the first time this event has had to pivot to meet the moment. GVLT’s Trail Mix has been going strong since 1996, when our good friends, Lisa & Russ Tuckerman invited GVLT supporters into their home for a fundraiser to benefit trails and raise critical funding for the nascent ‘Mainstreet to the Mountains’ trail system. As Trail Mix grew, it changed locations more than once, merged with GVLT’s annual Meeting and Chili Feed, and bounced around the calendar before it finally landed in mid-winter, right after the glow of the holidays has worn off and spring seems too far away to imagine. In 2013, GVLT presented the first annual Trail Partner Award at Trail Mix. This illustrious and highly coveted award recognizes an individual or organization that has made a significant contribution to our community trail system. Previous recipients include Bozeman Health, Terry Cunningham & Run Dog Run, SWMMBA, and Dr. Dan Gannon, the self-appointed, unofficial forest keeper of Triple Tree. The past several years have found us at the Lindley Center, spiritual home to all good grassroots environmental efforts, where we crowded in for a cold beer and a warm bowl of chili. Brenna Boyd, daughter of GVLT founder Chris Boyd, has fond memories of the GVLT chili feeds of the past, and it may be just a small nod to tradition, but it is a delicious one. Long-time supporter and owner of the Bountiful Table Doug Hert provides his recipe here:
Bountiful Table Chili
2# Ground Beef
2 medium onions medium dice
1 green pepper; 1 red pepper medium dice
2 minced jalapeños
2 15oz cans Kidney Beans
1 15oz can Black Beans
2 15oz can Diced Tomatoes.
1 15oz can Tomato sauce
3 T Chili Powder
2 t chipotle Powder
2 T dried oregano
2 t ground cumin
salt and pepper to taste
In Medium stock pot on medium heat brown ground beef with onions and peppers for 10-15 minutes. Drain grease. Add spices, jalapeno, canned beans and tomato products. Simmer for 30 minutes. Serve with your favorite cornbread recipe. Garnish with Sharp Cheddar cheese, chopped cilantro, scallions and sour cream.
Bon Appetit!
