New legislation will make ‘conservation easements’ more attractive to Montana landowners

Montana conservationists applauded a new piece of bipartisan legislation Tuesday that trades tax breaks for aiding the environment.
The law creates a permanent federal tax incentive that will encourage more Montana farmers and ranchers to place a conservation easement on their land. The tax incentive could allow some landowners to deduct up to 100% of their adjusted gross income over a longer period of time, making the option to conserve their land much more feasible.
